On Saturday 5th September at 8:30am, 20 members of Harrogate Round Table left Boroughbridge in a fleet of two man Canadian canoes to raise £5,000 for the Special Care Baby Unit at Harrogate District Hospital which will be used to buy intravenous infusion pumps which help premature babies survive by delivering very small doses of medicine.

The team canoed from Boroughbridge 20 miles along the River Ouse arriving, in true Table style, at the Kings Arms in York at 5pm. After 8 and half hours in canoes there were many aching backs, sore shoulders and tired arms; just enough strength left to raise a pint glass!

Harrogate Bonfire & Fireworks Display

The 2010 bonfire and fireworks display will take place on Oatlands Stray, Harrogate on 6th November. Precise timings will be announced here and on Stray FM nearer the time but the fireworks are likely to be lit around 7:15pm.

St Robert’s Beer Festival, Pannal

Pannal Beer Festival

St Robert’s Beer Festival is taking place on 10th and 11th September 2010. It’s being held to raise funds for St Robert’s church. Advance tickets cost £10 and include 6 half pint beer vouchers and a collectable glass to keep; tickets on the door will include 5 beer vouchers.

Advance tickets can be bought from The Old Bell, The Harwood, The Black Swan, Pannal Post Office and online from the Pannal Beer Festival website.

Harrogate & District Round Table held it’s annual AGM on 21 April. Amongst the many highlights of the evening were

£42,000 was raised and distributed to charities from the Beer Festival, Harrogate Bonfire, a sponsored cycle ride and a Christmas street collection
Two new members, Simon Stalker and Chris Morris were inducted
Jonathan Craig, a long standing member and contributor to the table was unanimously elected as Chairman

Harrogate Beer Festival An Outstanding Success

The 2010 beer festival was an outstanding success. We had over 5,000 people through the doors each one helping to raise money for local charities. We owe a huge debt of thanks to everybody involved especially the local businesses who sponsored the Beer Festival.

We’ll be announcing full details of how much was raised as soon as the accountants are finished with the figures…

Harrogate Beer Festival

2010 marks the 20th birthday of Harrogate’s annual charity beer festival. Since we started the beer festival in the masonic hall, it has grown enormously. Each stage of growth has meant a change in venue. We’ve moved from the masonic hall to the football club, to the rugby club and then in 2007 to the International Centre.

With over 32 beers, cider, perry a selection of wine and food, the beer festival is set to be our most successful yet.

There’s bands aplenty:

Bigg Wolf’s German Umpah Band: the top live UK Bavarian band are playing in full on thigh slapping Oktoberfest style on 25th February.
White Van Man – Friday evening
The Harrogate Band: Saturday Afternoon 2pm until 4pm – Harrogate’s premier brass band.

And to cap off the entertainment there will be Talent Search 2010 on Saturday night

Children supported by Harrogate and District Women’s Aid say thanks to Harrogate & District Travel

The children supported by Harrogate and District Women’s Aid made a touching thank you card following a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Once a year Harrogate Round Table organises a day trip for a group of 30 women and children supported through Harrogate and District Women’s Aid. The itinerary started from Pier Head in Harrogate on No 36 bus, kindly provided by Harrogate & District Travel, to Blackpool. After a few hours enjoying the roller coasters and dancing fountains of the Pleasure Beach, the party was treated to splendid dinner at the Admiral Pub in Blackpool, a short walk and a long tram ride to see the spectacular Blackpool illuminations. The trip returned to Harrogate just after 11pm exhausted and happy.

Remo Biagioni, the Round Table’s community service chairman, said that this trip “is one of the most rewarding aspects of our community service work. The trip has such an immediate and positive effect on local children – and their mothers – who are experiencing a difficult time”.

Harrogate and District Women’s Aid provides accommodation and support to women and their children escaping domestic abuse. Women and their children are provided with emotional and practical support to help them begin to rebuild their lives. Harrogate’s Got Talent!

The biggest Harrogate Talent Competition of the year has been launched. Auditions are at the Crown Hotel on 13th February withe live finals taking place on the 27th February in the Harrogate International Centre – part of the Beer Festival’s entertainment line up.

Helping The Harrogate Homeless At Christmas

This year’s Christmas Collection on the 19th December was held to raise money for the Harrogate Homeless Project. The Harrogate Homeless Project provides emergency overnight accommodation for single adults and helps them to find permanent and stable accommodation.

If the cold weather kept you away from the town centre today, you can still donate to the Harrogate Homeless Project online by going to justgiving or send a cheque to Harrogate Homeless Project, 7 Bower Street, Harrogate, HG1 5BQ.

The Christmas Collection raised £627.87.

Bonfire Raises £5,000 For Henshaws

Fireworks 2009

November 7th saw Harrogate’s most spectacular fireworks display to date. Over 9,000 people came to the Stray for one of the region’s remaining few free fireworks displays. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who came to watch the fireworks we were able to raise £5,000 for Henshaws Yorkshire, Ladies Circle raised £1,500 for Yorkshire Cancer from the sale of glow sticks and the Scouts raised £4,000 from the sale of coffee and burgers.
